Ounaies named associate head for administration in mechanical and nuclear engineering
Sept. 7, 2016
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Zoubeida Ounaies, professor of mechanical engineering, has been named the associate head for administration of the mechanical and nuclear engineering department. As associate head for administration, Ounaies plays a key role in the development of early career faculty with responsibility for coordinating faculty searches, mentoring new faculty, and assisting with inquiries about potential research opportunities.
“I am honored to serve our department in this capacity. My central role will be to facilitate the faculty search process and the mentoring of newly hired faculty,” Ounaies said. “I am especially excited to work with the talented new faculty and look forward to do what I can to promote and facilitate their excellent contributions to the mechanical and nuclear engineering department and Penn State.”
Ounaies joined Penn State in 2011. Earlier this year, she was named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and received the PSEAS Outstanding Research Award. She is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Materials Research Society, and the International Society for Optical Engineering. In 2007, she received a National Science Foundation CAREER grant.
She leads the Electroactive Materials Characterization Lab, where her research focuses on the development and characterization of mechanical-electrical-chemical coupling in polymers and polymer nanocomposites, and applications to advanced sensor and actuator systems. Ounaies has co-authored more than 120 articles in journals, books and conference proceedings, and holds seven U.S. patents.
“I look forward to working with Dr. Ounaies in her new role as an Associate Department Head," said Karen Thole, professor and department head. “Dr. Ounaies is a talented faculty member who will continue to make MNE a successful department.”
