Student and Alumni Mentoring Program
The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering and our alumni societies jointly support a robust mentoring and networking program for our students. Students can initiate a mentoring connection with an alumnus from either mechanical or nuclear engineering. Alumni, in turn, provide guidance, and networking opportunities for students.
Mentorships and networking connections create value in your education in many ways. By getting to know a professional in your field, you can:
- Open network connections to any number of engineering companies
- Gain a professional reference for your job search
- Learn about career paths in your field based on your mentor's experiences
As a current student in our Mechanical and/or Nuclear Engineering program, you can connect with an alumnus from the Penn State Mechanical Engineering Society (PSMES) or the Penn State Nuclear Engineering Society (PSNES).
Mentoring for Mechanical Engineers
To participate in the mentoring program, register online. Students are matched with alumni mentors based on educational background, career goals and hobbies. Once a match has been made, students and mentors will be notified of their matches and provided background information. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange the intial meeting. The student should contact the mentor within one week of receiving notificaiton. Matches are re-evaluated at the end of the first year of mentorship. If either the student or the mentor feels that the match is ineffective, a new match can be made.
Mentoring for Nuclear Engineers
All nuclear engineering undergraduate students are part of a PSNES group on Angel. Students have the ability to view the resumes of all volunteer mentors to find one that fits their needs. Students may then contact volunteer mentors directly. Graduate students who would like to contact a mentor can request to be added to the group by contacting Arthur Motta, firstname.lastname@example.org.
To view the alumni mentors, log into Angel and select the PSNES Group located in the Committee/Task Force section of My Groups.
