Semester Abroad

One semester of courses in mechanical engineering, provided in English and seamlessly integrated into your Penn State curriculum so you can still graduate on time. Spend a semester in overseas for the same tuition price you are paying at Penn State!

Program Details:

  • Language: Classes are taught in English (additional language requirements for Ecole Centrale Paris and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology)
  • Tuition: You will pay only your regular tuition to Penn State.
  • Room and Board: As part of the exchange, the university where you will be studying will assist you in securing appropriate housing.
  • Additional Expenses: You will be responsible for paying round-trip airfare costs from the United States.

National University of Singapore

The National University of Singapore is the country's oldest and largest university and is considered one of Asia's most prestigious institutes of learning. The NUS engineering department is the largest in the university, offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Ecole Centrale Paris

Ecole Centrale Paris is an engineering university situated in a suburb about a half-hour south of Paris. Ecole Centrale's curriculum aims to educate engineers with a high level of scientific and technical knowledge who are experts in initiating and piloting innovative projects and who have a strong international culture. Earn a Certificate of Accomplishment from Ecole Centrale Paris and join their alumni association, which has an extensive network of contacts within European Union corporations.

Paris is a bustling city in Western Europe that boasts a metropolitan population of more than 12 million. The capital and largest city in France, Paris is known as a seat of innovation. It has the highest concentration of Fortune Global 500 companies in all of Europe and comes first in terms of research and development capability and expenditure. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, with some of the most recognizable monuments and landmarks, including the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Notre Dame.

Language Requirement

Though classes are taught in English, it is recommended you have the equivalent of 2 years of high school or one semester of university-level French instruction before enrolling to get the most out of your experience. You may elect to participate in a 2- or 3-week intensive French program at the Vichy Institute prior to the start of classes.

Professional Component

You may choose to complete a 6-week paid internship with a French company when classes are complete.

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology was formed in 2009 through the joining of the University of Karlsruhe—one of Germany's finest institutions of higher education and the oldest technical university in the country—and the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (Research Center Karlsruhe), at which engineering and scientific research is performed in health, earth, and environmental sciences. With this program, students can choose from two curriculum plans in either energy or design and production.

Karlsruhe has a high-tech economy and is known for its excellence in higher education options, including the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and several other well-known institutions.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in China. Its full-time enrollment exceeds 38,000 students taught by 1,420 professors and associate professors. SJTU's School of Mechanical Engineering is located in the Minhang Campus, situated on the outskirts of metropolitan Shanghai. SJTU helps fund cultural travel excursions for exchange participants.

The official language is Mandarin Chinese, but other languages including English are widely spoken. Room and Board

You will be housed in an on-campus international student residence, the cost of which is comparable to or less expensive than most arrangements at Penn State. Campus canteen meals are included in boarding costs, and you will also have access to an in-residence kitchen.

Professional Component

SJTU offers a paid internship or research experience after your semester is complete.

Boasting the largest student body in Australia, with 39,000 undergraduates and 16,000 graduate students, it's no surprise that Monash University offers tons of opportunities for students. Monash is also well known for its research facilities, offering top-notch research in more than 150 fields and more than 120 research centers and institutions.

The University of Melbourne provides a solid academic foundation for its 35,000 students. The University also has a strong research program; it is the second largest research organization in the country. University of New South Wales

The University of New South Wales is a public research university boasting 46,000 students in 600 undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs. It was originally founded in the late 1940s to specialize in training high-quality engineers and later broadened its curriculum. The UNSW faculty of engineering is the largest engineering faculty in Australia.

University of Western Australia

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is recognized worldwide, and it boasts a strong research culture and history of industry partnerships. UWA has a commitment to the spirit of internationalism, with 4,500 international students and formal agreements with almost 230 institutions around the world.

Perth is situated on the southwestern Australian coastline and boasts 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, which gives you plenty of opportunities to enjoy sports and outdoor activities. The University of Auckland is an urban campus in the heart of Auckland's vibrant city life. As well as being New Zealand's top university, The University of Auckland is the country's largest. It has the most comprehensive range of courses in the country with teaching and research conducted over eight faculties and two large-scale research institutes.

The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Penn State is one of the nation’s largest and most successful engineering departments. We serve more than 1,000 undergraduate students and more than 330 graduate students

We offer B.S. degrees in mechanical engineering and nuclear engineering as well as resident (M.S., Ph.D.) and online (M.S., M.Eng.) graduate degrees in nuclear engineering and mechanical engineering.
